What is a Geiger Counter?

A Geiger counter, also known as a Geiger-Muller counter, is a handheld or portable device used to detect and measure ionizing radiation. It is named after the scientists Hans Geiger and Walther Muller, who developed the first version of this radiation detection instrument in the early 20th century.

The basic principle of a Geiger counter involves the detection of ionizing radiation, such as alpha particles, beta particles, and gamma rays. Inside the Geiger counter, there is a tube filled with a low-pressure gas (usually a noble gas like argon or xenon) and an electrode. When ionizing radiation enters the tube, it can ionize the gas, creating charged particles (ions and electrons) in the process.

The key component of the Geiger counter is the Geiger-Muller tube, which is sensitive to these ionization events. When an ionization event occurs, it produces an electrical pulse that is amplified and counted by the device. The rate of these pulses indicates the intensity of the radiation in the surrounding area.
